Sheela Na Gig Symbol - Keyring
Sheela Na Gig Symbol - Keyring
This is my subtle design based on the not-so-subtle Sheelas.
Sheela Na Gigs are stone carvings depicting a woman squatting while holding open her vulva. Though found in other places in Europe there is a higher concentration of them in Ireland.
Similar in some way to other stone 'grotesques' like gargoyles, they can be found in medieval churches, cathedrals and castles.
Though their specific purpose and meaning has been lost to time there are a few theories: they could be a pre-Christian diety; a symbol of fertility; to ward off evil or as a warning against sexual sin.
They could even be seen as a positive sexual symbol or a celebration of childbirth.
Though their meaning has been lost they have been reclaimed as a symbol of female sexuality and empowerment.
